The Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen (SFISM) is pleased to join the EOSE community and contribute to the shared mission of strengthening skills, education, and professional development across the European sport sector. Located above Lake Biel in the heart of Switzerland, SFISM serves as the country’s exclusive centre for sport science, sport education, and sport system development.
ABOUT SFISM
SFISM combines academic excellence, applied research, and national service provision to support the development of sport in Switzerland. Our mission is to advance sport through high‑quality education, evidence‑based research, and innovative sector development initiatives. We work closely with national sport organisations, universities, policymakers, and international partners to ensure that sport professionals are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to meet the evolving demands of the sector.
Our campus in Magglingen offers state‑of‑the‑art teaching facilities, laboratories, and sport infrastructure, including performance diagnostics, biomechanics and physiology labs, and a wide range of indoor and outdoor sport venues. These facilities support our Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Sport Science, our continuing education portfolio for coaches and sport administrators, and our applied research activities.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND AREAS OF EXPERTISE
SFISM’s work spans several core domains:
- Education & Training: We offer accredited higher education programmes in sport science, as well as a comprehensive professional and continuing education system for Swiss sport professionals.
- Research & Development: Our research units focus on sport pedagogy, sport psychology, sport physiology, exercise science, monitoring and sport management. We place strong emphasis on applied research that directly benefits practitioners.
- Services: We provide expertise, training, and tools to increase athletes’ performance, and to help federations and institutions strengthen their structures and their workforce.

CURRENT PRIORITIES AND CHALLENGES
Like many European partners, SFISM is addressing several strategic priorities:
- Digital transformation in sport education, including blended learning, digital coaching tools, and data‑driven performance support.
- Professionalisation of the sport workforce, ensuring that qualifications, competencies, and career pathways remain relevant and future‑oriented. professionalize
- Sustainability and inclusion, integrating ecological responsibility and equal opportunities into sport programmes and organisational development.
- Strengthening evidence‑based practice, bridging the gap between research and real‑world application.
These priorities align closely with EOSE’s mission to modernise sport education systems and promote a competent, mobile, and recognised sport workforce across Europe.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS AND PARTNERSHIPS
SFISM has a long tradition of international cooperation with the participation in international research consortia and projects, and bilateral partnerships with universities and sport institutes.
Joining EOSE provides a valuable opportunity to expand these collaborations, share expertise, and contribute to European‑wide discussions on skills development and sector innovation.
