Stephen Studd

Stephen has worked in the industry since graduating from London University in 1975. Following on from seven years hands-on management experience at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, which included staging international events, managing the administrative and finance functions and coordinating the operational development, Stephen moved to the Sports Council HQ.

 

Taking on a policy and strategic role, initially in the Facilities Unit and then through promotion into the Sports Development Team, he took responsibility for the work of the Council and Sport and Recreational Management. In 1989 Stephen was elected Chair of the Sport and Recreation Lead Body and led the industry development of its first national standards and NVQs, he has been at the centre of the Sector?s approach to learning and skills since then.

 

Following his secondment from the Sports Council in 1995 to establish SPRITO as the industry training organisation and then on to be the National Training Organisation, Stephen has been core to the development of the Sector organisation for education and training. Since the disbanding of the NTO network, Stephen has used his knowledge of the national skills agenda and his strategic and management capability to work very closely with the employers in the Sector to establish SkillsActive as the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning. It is fair to say that life has changed dramatically since the early days as the only employee of the lead body.

Thierry Zintz

Prof. Thierry Zintz has earned his Ph.D. in Physical Education (Management of Sport Organizations) from the University catholique de Louvain (Belgium) in 2004, where he also graduated in Physical Education  in 1977. 

Since 2005 he has been teaching Management of Sport Organizations at the Universitè catholique de Louvain. He also teaches in the French MOS (Executive Master in Management of Sport  Organizations) at INSEP (Paris).  He is a researcher in Sport Management, having published several articles and two books on the topic and has written also chapters of books  related to Sport management. He is Vice President of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee and President of the Royal Belgian Archery Federation. 

He is also marketing adviser of the Federation Internationale de Tir ? l?Arc and member of the steering committee of its Development Plan 2006-2012. 

Major areas of interest are 'Organizational Configurations of National Sport federations' and 'Change Management in Sport Organizations', with particular focus on the relation between professional  and volunteer actors. management and recruitment.

Alberto Madella

Dr. Madella has earned his Ph.D. in Methodology of Social Sciences from the University of Catania (Italy) in 1988, where he also graduated in Political Sciences in 1979. Since 1999 he has been teaching Management of Sport Organizations at the University of Florence and since 2003 he lectures in Sociology at the University Institute of Sport and Motor Sciences in Roma. He is a researcher in Sport Sociology and Sport Management, having published more than 25 articles and three books on the topic and has written also chapters of various Textbooks  on Sport management.

 He was President of the European Observatoire of Sport and Employment (EOSE) and General Secretary of the EASM (European Association of Sport Management) and is currently Vice-president of the European Network of Sports Sciences, Education and Employment (ENSSEE).

 He has served as a director for various research project in the field of sport employment and organisation in Europe and Italy and has led numerous project on Sports Employment in Europe and Alignment of Higher Education Structures in Europe since 2000.

 Dr. Madella is extensively involved in planning coaching education programs and design from youth sport to Olympic participation and responsible for the coaches' and sport manager training and curricula design for the Italian National Olympic Committee and many Italian National Federations.

Allan Pilkington

After training as a Physical Educator Allan taught and lectured in England, Australia and New Zealand before returning to the UK in 1977 where he continued to work in further and higher education before moving to the private sector specialising in training for the Sport and Active Leisure Sector representing Education .on the Fitness Industry Association Board.

Allan was seconded to The Sector Skills Council (SPRITO) as a Director of Operations in 1995 as. He had overall responsibility for Regional Activities, European Projects and Activities, Labour Market Intelligence and ICT Developments.

In 2001 Allan was appointed President of European Health and Fitness Association (EHFA) which had developed from the informal association ENFA.  Allan was appointed Adviser on Accreditation in 2007 when he stepped down as President.  Allan has recently been Vice President of ENSSEE, The European Network Sport Science Education, a Board Member of EASE the European Association of Sports Employers and a member of the ESWDA European Sport Workforces Development Alliance. He was a Board member of EOSE The European Observatoire of Sports Employment and is now a member of the EOSE Management Group and Head of Project Development.

In the UK Allan is the European and Regional Adviser to SkillsActive, the Chair of the North West Sport and Active Leisure Skills and Productivity Alliance ( SALSPA-NW ) and also Chair of the Alliance Chairs Group in the North West( ACG-NW).
