01/01/2009 - CZECH PRESIDENCY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Czech Republic took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1st January 2009 and will hold the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union, organising and chairing EU summits (European Councils) and meetings of the bloc's Council of Ministers. The Czech government has already announced the motto of its presidency, 'A Europe without barriers'.

Prime Minister Topolánek used the occasion of the logo's presentation to outline the priorities of his country's EU presidency, namely the economy, energy and external relations, and insisted that his government would adopt a "flexible approach" to addressing issues of common concern. Sweden will then take over Czech Republic on 1st of July 2009.
